About
Mother Mickens, as she was lovingly called, started out with her husband, Alfred Mickens, as the musician and her children as the members. As her sons Herbert, Alfred, George, and Terry grew, they began to play the music and formed the musical group called the Beth-EL Lights with their friend Thomas Jones. The church continued to grow, and The Beth-EL-Letts, Beth-EL Holy Choir, Beth-EL Jr. choir, and the Beth-EL Tots were formed. Then, Beth-EL expanded further as some of the members moved to other states and countries.
One of the places Beth-EL now calls home is Baltimore, MD, where our Bishop Floyd R. Simmons resides. Bishop Simmons was shown a seat in a dream one night. In the dream, he was told that the seat was loaned to him as long as he obeyed Yahweh's word. He later found out that a seat was a place of authority.
A few days later, the late Bishop Helen Mickens came to Baltimore from Hopewell, VA, where she resided at that time. She said she was in Baltimore to ordain Bishop-Elect Simmons to pastor. When Floyd told Bishop Mickens about the dream, she was not surprised. Bishop Mickens said the dream was just giving witness to what was about to happen. In 1975, Floyd R. Simmons became Pastor of Beth-EL in Baltimore. Mother Mickens also ordained his wife, Helen, who became the co-pastor.
Our church has grown, and through the struggle, we have been blessed with a wonderful family and faithful congregation. We are inspired by Habakkuk 3:17-19.
